Road Reports Jan 10, 2021

Please share road reports. Conditions change quickly this time of year. Be prepared for rocks and trees in the road, and deep snow in higher elevation. Remember there is no cell phone service.

Yellow Pine: Jan 10 we have 12″ of snow on the ground. Local streets are snow covered with icy spots in the shade. Please respect residents and wildlife and SLOW DOWN.
“Drivers don’t speed through neighborhoods or most anywhere. Locals brake for kids, wandering dogs, deer, elk, moose, fox, beaver, squirrels and chipmunks. Most are lifetime members of SPLAT, the Society to Prevent Little Animal Tragedies.” – IME

Warm Lake Highway: Open
Friday (Jan 8) County had plowed the summit.
Tuesday (Jan 5) report: Good solid packed snowfloor to the South Fork turn off. – DC
Monday (Jan 4) report: Six to eight inches of new snow most of the way to the Cascade side of Big Creek summit. Still snowing heavily at the summit; no recent plowing. – SL

South Fork Road: Open
Friday (Jan 8) report: The County grader plowed from Warm Lake intersection down to Penny Springs (so the County plow from Yellow Pine didn’t have to drive 27 miles to plow the last five miles.) There’s a good frozen snow floor the entire way. – WW
Wednesday (Jan 6) mail truck report: A few inches of new snow at the top from last snow storm, watch for ice on the middle section and patchy snow/ice on the lower part.
Tuesday (Jan 5) report: About 3 1/2 inches crusty snow since last plowed at Knox. Crusty snow on top of ice to about 12 mile marker. Ice floor from about 12 mile marker to Bill Darling’s. Broken ice floor from Bill Darling’s to Buckhorn Bar. Snow floor on ice from Buckhorn Bar to East Fork. No rocks to speak of, no downed trees. – DC
Monday (Jan 4) report: SF has some bare pavement, but lots of bare ice floor with no snow pack until the ascent to Reed airstrip. Ice floor is sporadic until the uphill climb to Poverty Overlook. It’s well plowed snow floor. 3:00 Monday snowstorm was heavy, wet snow from above Goat Crk all the way to Warm Lake Pavement. – SL

Friday (Jan 8) report: EFSF road is in great shape. – WW
Tuesday (Jan 5) report: Snow floor on ice on East Fork. Upper third of East Fork has new snow from last night. – DC
Monday (Jan 4) report: East Fork road from YP to SF is wet ice, no ruts. – SL

Johnson Creek Road: Deep snow at Landmark. No current report. Not recommended for wheeled traffic.
