Road Reports Jan 7, 2022

Note: Rain on snow has brought down slides, see below for road closures.

Please share road reports. Winter travel conditions. Most back country roads are not maintained. This time of year there is deep snow in higher elevations. Conditions can change quickly, be prepared for snow, ice, rocks and/or trees in the road. Remember there is no cell phone service. Please turn on your vehicle lights when traveling our narrow mountain roads, you are not the only vehicle on the one lane road.

Yellow Pine: This morning an average of 22 1/2″ snow on the ground. Local streets are snow packed and now slushy, most of the main paths were plowed Wednesday. Please respect residents and wildlife and SLOW DOWN.
Drivers, please don’t speed through neighborhoods. Locals brake for kids, dogs, horses, deer, elk and squirrels.

Highway 55 Open
Construction on ID-55 near Smiths Ferry has been suspended for the winter. Crews have winterized the work zone and removed equipment from the area for the season. All lanes on ID-55 are now open and will stay completely open until construction resumes mid-March 2022.

Warm Lake Highway: Open
Friday (Jan 6) travel not advised unless well prepared.
Report Wednesday (Jan 5) mail truck driver reports a foot of snow over the summit. County plow truck stuck on the side of the road, this side of Big Creek summit. (Had to chain up.)
Update: Later on Wednesday received report that plow was pulled out and county crews working on clearing snow.

South Fork Road: Temporarily closed.
Report Friday (Jan 7) from Valley County: “South Fork road is not open for travel. We will be able to open it as soon as we get a grader repaired to use. Hopefully tonight or tomorrow. Sorry for the inconvenience.”
Report Wednesday (Jan 5) mail truck driver reports 5-8″ snow on the road (not plowed yet.) Heavy snow bending trees down.

EFSF Road: Open?

Upper Johnson Creek Road: Closed to wheeled vehicles.
Report from late December that snowmobilers beat a path open to Warm Lake.
Lower Johnson Creek Road: No current report. Rain on snow may make travel very difficult.

Yellow Pine to Stibnite: Temporarily Closed.
Jan 6 report: “Currently we are shutting down the road between Stibnite and Yellow Pine. Chuck plowed the road this morning clearing some slides but on the way back to Stibnite encountered over 10 slides. He plowed thru just to get back up to site. With more snow and warmer temperature we are going to wait and clear the road when it’s colder. We will reassess in the morning to see if conditions change.”
